Long Branch 7.62 extractor and ejection issues...
Today I bought an NOS Long Branch 7.62 extractor for my DCRA rifle. The seller told me the right way to install the extractor spring without breaking it, it worked very well. He said he was told how by an old army armourer.
I installed the extractor.(the rifle had a .303 one on it) When feeding some blue plastic blanks it cycles well, ejection is so so but there is some. However, when I tried to feed some Canadian
Military ball(the rounds that come in those green plastic bandoliers) they seem to hang up on the extractor. Holding the Canadian rounds case head to case head with the blank, they are actually wider.
Does anyone know if those extractors need to be fitted, and if so what needs to be done?
Re ejection: I got some longer 3BA screws from Enfield Lock in England
. My LB has the 4/47 AJP rear sight, which needs a longer ejection screw anyway, so the longer screw was needed also for that...I set the screw in just far enough so it doesn't hit the bolt head...ejection is so so. This seems to be the way it is with Sterling magazines, they feed well but ejection is an issue.
I was told Sterling had two different ejector setups, one the hole drilled with the little top hat plunger, the other a track machined inside with a little spring dohickey on the inside...
Any insights welcomed.

Did CAL supply a different extractor when they rebarrelled No. 4s in 7.62? The rifles were only intended for single shot use, and a .303 extractor would serve to remove the case from the chamber.
Sterling conversions had a new, separate spring loaded ejector, which required receiver modification. The problem is that the .303 rim is close to the diameter of the boltface. When the extractor pushes the case to the left, the rim will either drag on the receiver sidewall, or strike the ejector screw, either resulting in ejection. The 7.62 head diameter is smaller, so the case must be pushed further to the left. I have a 7.62 extractor - doubt that it is LB, it seems to be a precision casting - with a longer beak. Unfortunately, it does not match the extractor cutout on a LB 7.62 barrel, and the bolt cannot be closed. The L42 type magazine has an ejector incorporated into the left rear lip.
For a longer screw at the ejector position to install an AJP or PH sight on a No. 4, use the butt trap spring screw from a scrapped buttplate.

If you want one of the new Long Branch extractors, I can put you in touch with the guy I bought mine from. $40.

I have never seen a DCRA conversion that would eject or that even had a longer than normal ejector screw. They where intended as single shot only. The 303 extracors were used and if did not reach in far enough a file was used to adjust them, as i did mself. As far as I know to get them to feed and eject 7.62 a Sterling type conversion was needed.

The two Sterling mags I have feed really well, but as for ejection...not much...

I spoke to Bob about the extractors, I don't believe he has another one to sell...I might have gotten the last one available. Worth a try though.

The LB ones were never meant to eject, only extract. This is why you do not use a mag with them. This way, the empty cart just falls out through the mag opening.

I got mine working just fine, feeding like butter from the Sterling mag, strong extractor spring and 7.62 extractor pushing the case over to the left to hit the extended ejector screw- works very well.
