Thumbs up New Scout mount and scope for M-1

Been frustrated for years trying to scope my NM M-1. I saw in the Rifleman this neat setup that replaces the upper HG and has a rail to mount a scout scope. Bought one from Brownell's and it's a piece of cake to mount. All materials and workmanship are
    A-1.
It does require you to pin the forward HG (normally floating on NMs) but as I'm not into sustained rapid fire, I doubt it will affect accuracy much. I had a now hard to find Burris 2.5-7x scout scope that I had had on my converted to centerfire 41 Swissicon. (shuda kept that rifle!) and it mounted up fine so very low you are barely above the rear "peep" sight.
If weather breaks off to range tomorrow to see how well the rifle shoots now that I can see the target.

Low Weaver rings were too low. Found in "my box" a set of cross lock Millets just a tad higher. Ocular housing just clears receiver ring. Took it up to the range with one clip of plain old 1964 Ball M2. A bit of fiddling @ 25 got it centered and the last three went out to 100 yds. They made a nice 3/4" group. (It is a NM rifle).
Clearly by far the best way to scope an M-1 ever conceived.
On NMs you do have to pin the normally floating front HG.

    Looks like this

except my scope is a tad lower. It just works great with a stock set up for irons.

    M1 Garand Scout Scope Mount

Been too busy playing with my SMLE, Swede 96 and Bushmaster 450 to dig it out for pics.

If you have a commercial account with Brownells you can get it cheaper.

    Thumbs up

It's rock solid. When you shoot 8 full power GI loads off a bench rest, anything that will move does. IF your rifle in a National Match (like mine) you must be sure to pin the front hand guard (as all battle rifles were). The hole is there, you just need to make a pin.
Of those 8 shots the last 3 @100 went in 3/4". The first 5 were spent testing and getting on the paper @25.

In the photos you can see the big allen screws that secure the fitted clamps around the barrel. Nothing is going anywhere. The objective lens does clear the hand guard by just enough as does the ocular the receiver. If the rear peep intruding a bit in you FOV bothers you, you could get higher mounts or remove it. I like the tight cheek weld as I have it. If you have ever shot an M-1 C or D, you will be transported to OZ.

    Hers are pics of mine:

Too bad it took 60 years to figure out this:

M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When we could have had M-1s like mine out there in the 1940s. Think of this chambered in a 7mm/06 variant with 180 gr Berger VLDs. 1000 yard kills would happen and 8 shots quick is much better than any sniper bolt gun.

    Very nice set-up.
I'm considering having an old Blue Sky imported M1icon converted into a .308 "Mini-G" by Schuff's.
Tim can install the Optimak scout mount while he's at it. On mine, the '06 barrel's pitted and worn out anyway. So no choice but to re-barrel it.

The CMPicon sells a similar mount for around a hundred bucks that's made of milled aluminum. It it's no longer available I have one I am no longer using though I believe it's at my place in Tenn. at this time
