Late Remington 03a3

For someone who has read the old Jouster forum for years, ill pretend to be a newbie since the information I have available wont tell me the answer.

When was SN 4093xxx produced? it has a 10/43 barrel and im wondering if it has been rebarreled at some stage. It certainly is late production but im not sure when 03a3 production actually ceased.

Your receiver was serialized about December, 1943. The barrel is probably original. M1903A3 production ended about February, 1944, although I believe spare parts and M1903A4 production continued for a while longer. The latest Remington M1903A3 (non-M1903A4) was in the 4,209,000 range.

FYI, I have 40485xx with 8-43 dated barrel. It was purchased by by uncle thorough the NRA / DCM in the 60's.

IIRC, a 1/44 barrel date is about the latest one would find on an original Remington, and not many of them, so a 10/43 on a Dec. reciever would fit pretty well ... I would think....

There is some dispute as to whether a 1-44 barrel was a "production" barrel or a "replacement". As I recall, Larry Byrd said that he had noticed at least a few 1-44s as original. 9-43s to 12-43s are more common. I also agree with you about the 10-43, as you noticed in my original reply.

One thing I appreciate about the new forum is the "resize" feature. New Scotlander's pictures were originally nearly a megabyte in size. 50-100Kb is plenty big. The reason being is that it even takes a bit for us DSLers to download such a size. For those on dial-up it is almost impossible.

To my knowledge, nearly all computer photo-editing programs have a "resize" button.

Rick, My apologies. I uploaded that picture onto Photobucket at the maximum size (1 meg). I should have made it smaller. I have cable, so I don't realize the download time. Next time, I'll upload it as a smaller file.

I didn't mean it as a "major" criticism - I used to do it, myself, until someone reminded me of the need to reduce it. As I said, this website does an admirable job of "catching" these pictures.
