Sg98 bayonet project

I picked up a bayonet "carcass" at a flea market ($20USD) in overall poor condition: Slightly bent blade, missing grips and fasteners, no scabbard.

I would like to restore it as much as may be possible or practical.

Could someone please direct me to a source for the grips and fasteners?

Reproduction parts are perfectly OK for my purposes as well as used parts in serviceable/repairable condition. My Google-foo not strong.

Ebay is your friend. I have one of those nasty $20 temtations. Never got real far with it. Post photos maybe you'll inspire me. My wood and screws are fine, it's the metal that really stinks. Bad grinding, ton of pitting.

To be honest, that's not that hard. The outside figure is the hardest, you'd end up with smooth scales. The bolts would be harder to replicate.

You could probably use the grip screws from another bayonet provided the screws are long enough. You can always shorten the screws but, obviously, it's slightly more difficult to lengthen. For example when, in the past, I needed a couple of grip screws for a number 5 bayonet, I used 1907 grip screws which I shortened fractionally. There are grip screws available for sale on eBay just not ones specifically labelled up as being suitable for your bayonet, at the moment. If I was looking for the grip screws for this bayonet I would see what is currently available on eBay and then select something that I think may do the job. I would then contact the vendor and ask for confirmation of the length of screw, the screw diameter and the head diameter.

You're right BAR. If I ever have the need to make or have anything made I always order/make over the odds on the basis that if I need some, say grip screws and nuts, then there's plenty of others that do too! So I sell them off on that auction site at sufficient profit to pay for mine too! The good thing about making your own grips is that you can make them from any wood - from the original type to whatever takes your fancy or matches the rifle it's fitted to
