Designed for use in helicopters and armoured vehicles in the late 1960s, the 7.62 mm (0.3 in) calibre M134 Minigun is based on the multiple-barrelled Gatling design.
It has six barrels that are revolved by an electric motor and fed by a 4,000-round link belt. This allows for a firing rate of 6,000 rounds per minute, or 100 per second, about ten times that of an ordinary machine gun.
