Friday was the 73d year since the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. The first flag was not as famous as the second. Who was first doesn't diminish the fact that they were all brave heroes & every American needs to honor them. Semper Fi & God bless the USA.

I read Flags of Our Fathers about this. Still worth a read even though the author’s father wasn’t actually a raiser after all.
Sorta makes you roll your eyes at all the “he never wanted to talk about the flag raising” references but his father was still a hero and it’s still an interested read.

My cousin graduated from high school in June 1944, his 18th birthday was July 4, 1944. Six weeks later he was in the marines. He landed with the first wave of the 5th Marines on Iwo Jima, he was part of a forward fire control group.
He spent thirty one days on Iwo Jima and was never injured. I remember asking him what weapon he carried on Iwo Jima, he said a Winchester Model 12 shotgun

My grandfather fought in the Pacific on the Islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. Maybe I should post some of those pictures. Most are pretty graphic not sure if you guys want to see dead, burned and blown up bodies.

Here are a sample of some without dead people, well at least not when these pictures were taken.

Firt photo: with the state of my eyes, that could be what I need - a spotter dog!
Presumably not a combat photo. But why is the shooter wearing what looks like a motorbike-rider's visor?

All of these are combat photos (with the exception of the posed guy without shirts) taken at white beach one on Guam D, D+1, D+2, and D+3. It's not a visor, its damage to the picture I think, I will have to pull the snapshots out of the box and look to be sure. these are tiny photographs maybe that I scanned a while back when I found them with a bunch of stuff my grandfather kept. (like his KA-Bar)
