Scoping an M1A as close to USGI as possible
And another fine mess Ive gotten myself into.
I have seemed to have posted a number of foolish threads recently, so Ill just add this one to my name.
I would like to scope my M1A
as close to one of the USGI configurations as possible.
What would be possible scope bases available today? I am assuming that vintage scope bases are either unavailable or way beyond my price limit.
Ive got a vintage M84 scope, but right now I just use the vintage rings typical for the Korean War 1903A4 using the M84 (Redfield?)
I also have a HiLux Leatherwood M-1000, but it is not an ART and with is mount design it sits pretty high, so Id need the lowest profile base possible. Otherwise, Id just have to adjust to a very large bore to optics center distance. I consider this scope because it has some functional features similar to the USGI Leatherwood scope. I think it would be fun.
I am leaning towards the M84 though as it seems to me the result will be as close to authentic USGI configuration that I am likely to achieve.
Any constructive ideas?

The early style AMU mounts are out there that take the M1C mount. There is one on eBay with a scope asking $4K at the moment. Repros of the base, mount and M84 scope are out there if you look.
The ART I and ART II scope/mounts are out there too. The ART II is relatively easy to find.

:-) A vintage M84 scope I got, cash to spend...not so much! Ill check out what is out there using AMU mount as the key word? I am almost afraid to learn the prices for ART I and ART II scopes, but Id love to see the mounts.

If you search "M84 scope" you'll find it. Looks like a USGI M84 scope, USGI Griffin & Howe M1C rings (numbered to an M1C) on a AMU base that I'm not 100% sure about. The knob may be replaced. AMU was the Army Marksmanship Unit.
The ART-TEL is going to likely be over $3K.
An ART I slightly less.
ART II is probably somewhere in the $2-2500.
Scopes should be complete with the mount and can for those prices.
I believe there was a thread going about ART scopes on the CMP
Forum recently.
The CMP sold off a decent number of ART II scopes and cans about 20 years ago and Iron Sight Inc. still services them.
