Always liked the original version of carbine. Our C8 started like that with a 14.5" length 1 in 7" twist barrel and was perfect. Then they had to mess with it, now it weighs the same as the rifles did. About the same length too...

I did up a few of the large hole uppers by machining a tight plug for the front hinge pin and using sleeve locker and a tight fit to bond. Then using the lower for a guide would drill for the hinge pin so it fit tight. We couldn't get some things here and had to make do a few times.

JIm, I so agree. The American Colt models 653, 654, & 720, and the Canadianicon R725 (C8) were perfect carbines. Mine weighs 5.75 pounds empty. The M4s of today weigh 8 pounds, or more with all the cr*p they hang on them. For that weight, I'd rather have a FAL or G3.

One of the infantry model FAL with the really low sights and swept back pistol grip would be fine...

I agree. I had an Argentineicon FAL kit (only dropped once in the Falklands) on an Imbel lower. Awesome rifle.

It may seem like a bit of a dumb question but why does your 1990 AR have to have the "non pistol grip" but the 1967 model doesn't to be California Compliant?

Its a "Commiefornia" thing. The retro XM16E1 has a System that makes it a fixed/attached 10 round magazine, so it can have evil features. The GAU-5 has a pinned stock, nuzzle brake instead of flash hider, and non-pistol grip. It is "featureless" having no evil features, so it can use detachable, legally possessed high capacity mags.
