m1 carbine barrel markings

hi my 1st time posting. have recently purchased a nat. postal meter m1 carbine with a marline barrel. however there is a stamp on the barrel that says ridege i think any help as to what that means

mskup, welcome to the forum. Alot of carbine "Miesters" here!! It is probably an importers stamp. I believe the Carbine Club had a news letter that listed alot of importers awhile back. I'll try and find it, if someone doesn't come up with it sooner. We like pictures, so try and get some up.

If it is "ridge" instead of "rideg", it would it as part of Navy Arms import marking. N.A. Co. wth Ridgefield, N.J. under it. John

It's possibly an importer's mark, but doesn't sound familar to me. Maybe try an Internet search using the exact letters you see stamped there - that may turn up something. Welcome to the forum! - Bob

Welcome to the Carbine forum.

National Postal Meter made about 413,000 carbines (6.7%) in three serial number block ranges. Marlin was one of the barrel suppliers. So the barrel could be original to the receiver. As others have said, pictures, pictures, pictures. Have you taken it down yet? Checking the other parts for markings?

John is right. It's a Navy Arms Co. import stamp. Quite often the full stampings are faint and hard to see. Some even look like a scratch on the bottom of the barrel.

Marlin did produce some carbine barrels. I don't know if one could be original on a NPM. Seems like it was mentioned on the old original forum a few years ago.

NPM used barrels supplied by the government free issue program. Barrels from Underwood, IBM, Rock-Ola, Buffalo Arms and Marlin were used during their production. Marlin did produce quite a few barrels but they were not held in high regard as many had problems that had to be corrected before they could be used.

I have a NPM with the original Marlin barrel.
You have to look for the PUNCH MARK applied by NPM on the barrels they used.
PUNCH MARK is near the P proof stamp.
