    Winchester Type I Front Sight

I keep seeing ads for front sights that have a mill mark that is said to indicate that it is for Winchesters. What I find says that that the Winchester sight is unmarked.

Turning to the experts here to validate if any unmarked front sight could be on a Winchester.

    Thanks

When they say milling mark, they are not talking about a letter. Behind the post there is a milled area that the cut looks like a thumb nail.

The presence of the "thumb nail" appearance of the milling on a front sight behind the post is not exclusive to Winchester (Lyman) sights.

Winchester sights have a distinct side profile not found on sights made by the other sight manufacturers.

Just wanted to add to both Jim and Brians input.
Early Winchester sights could be found with a L stamped on the right outer ear. These were the only Winchester...made by Lyman sights marked.
The as it's commonly called 'Thumbnail' milling scar behind the sight blade can be found on many frt sights. The milling scar on Winchester seems to be the largest, thought to be because of Lyman using a bigger cutting head during the milling out process.

I've included some pictures to show you the side profile of a Winchester sight compared to a Rock Ola, which is marked TR on the front.

RIGHT SIDE....Winchester sight on the left. Notice it has a longer arc or curve to it on the back of the ear....

    Left side....Winchester on the right,

Top View...Winchester on the bottom. Notice both show some milling scars on top. But the cuts on the Winchester are more aggressive from use of the larger cutting head.

Another example shows the frt sight on my 1,823 mil S'G' which shows some of the arc of a thumbnail pattern but none of the heavy milling scars......it is marked with a N,

Guys get to know the coarse milling from the outside and the 'Thumbnail Pattern' on a Winchester/Lyman frt sight from experience. But knowing how the outer ears are shaped and sloped is the best way to positively ID it.

I've seen the thumbnail cut on RIA marked sights too.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!
