Thread: 1943 No4 Mk1* problem

    1943 No4 Mk1* problem

    I recently purchased a 1943 No4 MK1* savage arms lee enfield. A few times the bolt head has actually skipped outside of the bolt raceway. I searched everywhere about this problem and have found out that it only occured on MK1* specifically. I couldn't find any advice on repair or temporary fixes that would help my situation. Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

    Hopefully you didnt pay too much for this as it is bu****ed.
    The bolt raceway is damaged - particularly the front where there is a big chip out of it just where the bolt head sits. The rear portion is also damaged (it should be a 'square corner' not stepped back)
    I have never heard of any repair to this area being successful. Maybe your only chance would be to weld a piece in and re-profile it but dont forget that the action is 'hardened' and you may well ending up annealing it with the heat from the welding

    You can repair the rails with weld - it doesn't have to be absolutely perfect to work ok. I think there are a couple of gunsmiths in US who routinely do this repair - but it would probably be cheaper to buy a new rifle than to pay the shipping & 'smiths' fees.....

    Thanks for the replies.. I might end up trying to weld it if it becomes a problem.
    And I contacted Scott about the repair and he said he couldn't do shipping.
    Looks like I'm SOL on this one..

    It is a 'problem' now dont risk it.

    Its your face, your life and your choice but I would suggest not firing it until you have it fixed.
