    Nov 1944 M1

I bought this M1icon from a gunshop in Miami FL. The owner knew that the reciever, bolt and bbl matched, but seemed to have no clue about the stock or the internals. I bought it because I also saw a vertical line throught the grain of the wood that made me think it was a cartouche. It also had a really old leather sling( brass hooks) with it. When I got it home I cleaned the stock with Murphy's Oil Soap( was that a No, No?) and found a slightly visible SA/GAW cartouche and a small Ordnance wheel on the heel. The stock is actually in very good shape. The parkerizing is pretty much all gone on the reciever. The Op rod has alot more parking and so does the indented rear handguard clip, extractor, and the gas tube. The muzzle passes the bullet test but I have no gauges and neither did the gunshop owner. Can anyone tell me any more about this? Was it worth the $1000 I paid for it? I'm certainly not an expert. I have 2 of Scott Duff's book's and can read, but thats it on my experience with M1's.

I still use photobucket to host my pictures and then I download them to here. I'm sure there are other picture host sites but I don't know of them off hand. I think you got a decent deal on the rifle, it seems to have a lot of period parts. I would like to see the pics.

    Riverrat,

That's pretty cool, your rifle was made under 6,000 apart from mine, and I just got mine last week. I guess yours is probably more orignial than mine, since it would seem mine has been re-parkerized at some point. It is interesting to compare the parts drawing numbers to see how yours and mine differ since they were made the same month. You can see pictures of mine in the post "I think I found a winner" on here. I upload my pictures directly to milsurps, as described in the sticky thread located a few lines above your post titled something along the lines of "how do I upload pictures to my post for storage on the milsurps.com server". I would be interested in seeing a picture of the chamber mouth of your rifle, as I'm still trying to figure out some questions I have about my own. Anyways, I think it's pretty neat that you and I acquired rifles so close togetther in production date just a week apart.

This is an interesting spreadsheet that tracks the part drawing numbers on your parts and compares them to your serial number to determine liklihood of origninality. Of note, I've found some things in the spreadsheet that popped up as questionable, but upon cross-reference with Poyer's book turned out to be quite standard.

The GAW and NFR stock cartouches seemed to have a period of overlap in October/November of 1944. Examples would seem to indicate that your GAW stock, if anything, is more likely to be original than my NFR stock, but I'm no expert, I've just been reading my butt off the last couple of weeks. My bolt has some black parkerized parts (extractor, for instance) with the bolt body parked in gray. Does yours exhibit this? Also interesting is that both our barrels are 10-44 dated, but mine has an extra dash compared to yours. Mine is marked 1-S-A-10-44.

I knew about the GAW/NFR thing. I did not know about a Player doing research. I read Scott Duffs book. From what I've read from him my M1icon has no parts on it later than the received date but it does have earlier parts. Like the indented rear handguard clip was discontinued in late 42 but its on mine. I on my smartphone now and will get back with you later. Oh! I actually bought this rifle last June but I'm so bad with computers I only now figured out how to put pics up

My extractor is the only thing on the bolt with any park left. Makes me wonder if it wasn't replaced at some point.
