    1898 Krag

I just aquiried my first krag rifle sn: 247070 Its in excellant condition. While cleaning it i found markings when i removed the butt plate .On the back of the butt plate stamped in the metal was the number 7887.Then on the wood underneath the butt plate where 2 number 64 was innthe upper right hand corner and the a o in the bottom left corner. Does anyone know what these letters are. Any help will be apreciated.

    Thanks Tom

I expect the numbers are inspector's numbers and the serial number doesn't come close to anything I can find. Made in 1899 as far as I can find.

They are assembly numbers and are supposed to match each other, Ray

On my Model 1898 & 1899 Krags, I have never noticed any relationship between butt-plate inspection/manufacturing numbers & markings and the rifle or carbine's serial number - FWIW.
