When I use a sling like that a half twist to the left before you wind it across your hand eliminates that edge cutting into the top of your hand.
A while back I was watching an old western movie. In one of the cowboy/indian firefights one of the Indians was in full chicken wing pumping the heck out of his '73. Thought it was pretty humorous.
Hold the rifle to your shoulder with one hand, reach straight back behind your head with your shooting hand, swing it up and over your head to the trigger. This will lock the bones in place and make it easy to hold that elbow high
