    H&R M1 Garand

I want to purchase an H&R Garandicon manufactured in 1953, late 53 if possible. What serial number range would I look for? I will be patient and persistent in my pursuit!

I would say that generally the HRA produced rifles between 4.6 million and 4.7 millon. There are always examples that don't fit in the normal range for various reasons. There is a known 5.5 million HRA that has an original 9-53 dated barrel and serial number 4682394 that has a 1-54 dated barrel.

I agree with "Guts" as far as the 4.6, 4.7 mil being your best bet for 1953. As far as a 5.5 with a 9-53 barrel, all that means is that an early barrel was used, not that the rifle was assembled in 1953. As far as the 4.68, a 1-54 barrel date seems to indicate that the 4.68 receiver was barreled about a month later than you might expect. You could find a 4.6 or 4.7 with a late barrel date of say 3-54. This would indicate that for some reason the rifle was not built up until Mar. 1954 or after, assuming the barrels are original to the build. I would think you would want a late 4.6 or early 4.7 with a 1953 dated barrel.
