    50 vickers ammo

Not that anyone out there has a rifle chambered for this baby, but it is milsurp and you just may run across it and wonder what it is.

Whatever you do don't try shooting it out of your nice new 50 BMG rifle!

that round is seldom found this side of the pond anymore. it used to show up on the gunshow tables once in a while, but i havent seen any for a quiet some time now. in my small collection, i have 4 rounds, plus a very very hard to come by original cloth belt. hear is a pic, with a 50 browning multiball round for size comparison

That is very interesting. It looks almost to be a .55 Boys with no headspacing belt.

The .50" Vickers started out c1918 as rimmed case based on the .600" NE lengthened and necked down. A belted version was then tried and the rimless round was adopted in the 20s. There is also a semi rim version that was extensively used by Italyicon and Japanicon.
Vickers also made a .50" Type D ctg which was bigger and more powerful than the 50 Brg.

Can you throw one of the 50 cal cartridges from the old 106 recoiless rifle spotting guns up for comparison? I run accross the brass occasionally, and always wondered if it would be of any use to anyone.

Sure Rob, no problem. i allways thought it would be a neat cartridge to build around. short 50 as would be called undoubtably.

just thought id say that anyone comeing across these rounds, you have to be very carefull with them. the bullets will explode if dropped hard enough. WP inside is nasty

I have a close friend down the street from me who also collects rare cartridges, thousands would be a gross understatement. When another friend passed away, he purchase his collection for a huge sum and was happy to pay for it. All I know he traded two single bullets for a Germanicon Sporting rifle made in the 1930's for them, While I may have many thousands of rounds locked in the bunker, I don't think they have any value other than shooting F.W.I.W.-SDH
