    Colt 606 upper

Use to find the uppers at gunshows, sometimes three or four on a dealers table, just the complete upper without the carrier & bolt. The dealers use to say they came from Canadaicon.

Colt heavy barrel that has a 1 in 12 twist, note the early profile of the gas tube and also
    the flash hider. Attachment 49906Attachment 49907Attachment 49908Attachment 49909Attachment 49910

I can't imagine why they would have come from us? We didn't use them in service...

I do not think anyone used the Colt 606 in service as the US Army only ordered a very small quantity. They were exported and tested, being a pound heavier than the standard rifle, this was the first attempt at a heavy barrel for sustained fire. There were bipods designed and adopted like the M60 bipod. With the heavy barrel for sustained fire, only the 20 rd magazine was available (Colt did design a belt fed but never accepted) until the 30 rd magazine started to become available in 1969. Armalite did design a 75 round drum for their AR 18/180 which would also fit the Colt models but doubt any were used.

The Colt 606 upper is part of the history of M16iconAttachment 49930Attachment 49931Attachment 49932Attachment 49933

    Colt Heavy Barrel upper

Very neat to see the older colt heavy barrel uppers still in circulation!

Photo shows the early Colt 606 which was developed from the Colt 604. Other variations:
