Inland - rear sight broken (help)

Hi... I just purchased another Inland carbine (serial no 526xxxx). It is 100% original condition except for the stock. The stock has been sanded down, so now the crossed cannons cartouche is gone. :-(

The "hole" on the rear sight has been removed. Is the rear sight supposed to look like this, when that has been removed? Or has the sight been bubba'ed?

As far as I can see the rear sight is of the stamped type. Can anyone tell me the exact model/type? I would like to restore the rear sight back to original. Is it enough to buy just the "hole"-part....or should the whole rear sight be changed? And where can I find the replacement parts in a nice condition?

I may have a type III rear sight you can have. I will have to look so give me a couple of days. What markings are on yours?

A type III Hemphill (H in a shield) would be correct. That is a Type III stamped sight on it. I am not sure, though, about it being original to the weapon, or if it was put on during a rebuild. I would have to check and see if that serial number range had Type I (flip), Type II (milled), or Type III (stamped) like is on it now.

if you find you must remove the sight and replace it with another make sure you do it right. Sights go off to the right and on from the right, never the left side. Use the proper tool, here is a set I bought off of ebay, many carbine owners have these tools sold on ebay (and other places). This is the full set but if you check his auctions you can just get the rear tool if so desired. There is also videos on his ebay pages on how to remove/install sight. Also be careful that the staking is not too deep in the dovetail area. I once took a small piece of a corner of a dovetail off when I removed a rear sight on a Standard Products carbine. An Inland in the 5.2 million range would have had a type 2 marked H.I. or type 3 rear sight marked I.R.Co. It will be easier to replace the rear sight instead of trying to get a peep for the one you have and getting it installed.

Since that carbine left the factory with that sight, the staking will be substantial and well struck. Point being it won't come off easily. I would try and replace the sliding part that is missing the peep. It is just bent sheet metal and you may be able to carefully make sufficient room to get it to slide out. There is no downside to trying since failure means that you replace the sight anyway. I work on watches and am very used to taking small assembled things apart. Anything that was assembled can be taken apart with care. I'd personally prefer a slightly buggered original sight and its strong staking than a replaced perfect sight that could loosen.

The rear sight could also be a PI marked type 2.

Are you located in Italy? And is the rifle "ZW" marked on the trigger guard?
