When you think of the uniforms those boys wore compared to anything you can buy off the rack today, it's a wonder more didn't die from exposure than did. I was just looking at all my WWII uniforms, M41 or M43 field jackets, boots, leggings, socks and I cringe!

The infantry has always gotten the short end of the stick in the winter. Think Valley Forge, Chosen Reservoir, Moscow (1812 or WWII take your pick.)

Yes, wool shirts, wool pants, wool lined Tanker jacket, wool socks. The M41 field jacket had sateen outer shell.

I've read they used bed sheets to improvise winter camo

As a deep desert deweller all my life ( never seen snow falling till I was 50 or so ) I just can't appreciate fully what they went through . I have to bundle up like that when it's down in the low 40's .

I spent time in the Army in Germany
. 1969 thru 1970. It was cold there. I was cold almost everyday. Even the building did not have heat. Lousy boots, fatigues, brrrrr!
