I've had mine close to 15 years, no mechanical problems of any kind to date. Had to replace the factory wood stock a couple years ago after it warped while drying out after getting caught in a down pour on a hunting trip.
Personally I'd avoid the new ones all together, based on the last couple I looked at they don't appear to be made to the same quality standards as the older one were. Parts fit leaves a lot to be desired, IMO. Namely the op rod/guide track fit, very sloppy.

I think you would probably be happy with one of the older M1As that were built with mostly G.I. parts. I know a friend of mine bought a new one and never was happy with it. He found a early NM M1A that had been shot quite a bit. He traded for it and gave some boot. But now he has one he likes. He says the new guns don't have a soul. I tell him he just needs to shoot them enough to give them a soul. I didn't buy a new one either guess I shouldn't talk. A friend and I built Me one with a Armscorps Rec. and all G.I. parts, I am happy with it. You know it has some history to it with the G.I. parts. You will love it, buy one we are about the same age I'm 69.

I recently got a new Loaded model and it is a well made, accurate, and so far reliable rifle. I'm very happy with the rifle.

"Bone stock no GI parts having" Scout M1A that's only a few years old in a fancy wrapper. Completely satisfactory rifle!:
"Bone stock" meaning that the barrel, gas system, receiver gtoup, etc. are factory SA Inc. Lots of froo-froo added to tart it up, but function and accuracy are courtesy of a good foundation.

I bought a 57xxx version with a SAI unmarked barrel and a Boyds stock. It has a SAI trigger housing and Garand trigger and safety, SA hammer. Bought a real GI stock for $50 including metal. The Boyds is a medium weight match stock - feel great, but just doesn't look USGI. Thanks for the advice.

Jmoore, nice rig. I never liked the weight of the forend and the stock though. We found that putting the reflex sight further forward allowed for faster target acquisition. That is the beauty of a reflex sight, you do not need to be in a perfect firing position to get the first round off. When the red dot is on target, you can squeeze off your first round, as you are acquiring a better sight picture. Not true of irons or magnified sights.

That one was placed to see if cowitnessing the iron sights was practical. Works fine and the small sized reddot way up front just seems to lose something. Would rather put a standard sized redot up front. But then the scope would be in the way.
