Telescope caps serials should match 198-198 197-197 so in the pic 197 on 198 is a mismatch as they are paired top to bottom, nice rifle.

The story is starting to come together. I purchased the rifle from a collector that used to be a large surplus dealer during the late 60s to 80s in Canadaicon. He had access to some of the eariest milsups that came in..He would have had the ability to assemble this set.
PrinzEugen. I have added the pic of the S51. Any thoughts?

Likely from someone who thought it referred to an original telescope serial number.

I've seen no4mki(t) rifles with the rifle serial number added to the top of the wrist, scope serial numbers added to the bracket...Long Branches with H&H type inspection marks...

People often like to "correct" expensive guns... To make them more expensive...

Yep, trying to make a correct rifle 'even more correct' is a common problem when people have acquired a little knowledge & don't have too many scruples. Only a few weeks ago I saw a nice honest early conversion No4 T based on a BSA 1941 rifle. Indeed it had been sold by me some years ago. Unfortunately in the meantime it had grown some extra receiver markings; our tyro obviously thought the lack of a 'TR' & a 'M47/C' must make it less desirable, so he added them to the butt socket, straight over the original blued finish & in a totally different font to the originals. The current owner suspected as much & I was very sorry to have to confirm his suspicions of vandalism.

I have the original S51 stamps that I picked up off the examiners bench at the old now demolished H&H factory plus some other odds and sods! Wish I'd taken more photos!

As they are lined through with the "-.-" cancellation mark (closest I can type it) that was probably done by an armourer who felt the "S51" was no longer applicable in some sense. We've seen other rifles with "T" and "TR" stamps added by armourers who naturally believed they were making things all consistent and logical, such as No4(T)s built on trials No4s which never had such stamps originally.

Then there are the busy beavers in the civilian world who just can't resist "improving" things as Roger mentioned!

“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

Much changes, much remains the same.
