Convertibility? To what? It has little or NO finish on it now. It has filed or ground parts and needs help. Send it back and be done with it then. You can't magic it to new.

heck, list it on gunbroker that your grandaddy brought this back from the big war lol. There are some who like a been there, done that look. Of course from the pics I cannot see the yellow you mean but if you want to sell it drop me a note.

Jim has said it in both threads. Too expensive for a shooter, not good enough for a collector. And you wrote that the seller gave you a return option.
Keep or return. Decide now.
If you do any more to it, you run the risk that the seller will refuse to take it back because you've irreversibly altered it.

]You are exactly rights. That is just what I was thinking.
I am sending it back on Monday (cant ship Fedex today).
The deal all along was that I had a five day inspection period with the seller's knowledge that I was going to attempt to remove the yellow.
If I did not like the gun after removing the yellow (or trying and being unsuccessful), I could send it back.
I told a little white lie in that I said that I wiped it down with CLP and most of the yellow came off.
I said I didnt want to use anything more harsh as I didnt want to ruin the gun (mostly true - I didnt want to try anything more harsh than the acetone).
Frankly, I DID make it look better IMHO.
Today I picked up a really nice Standard Products M1
Carbineicon to replace the Winchester.

Anton is this guy a friend ? Not to add Salt to the wound, but hasn't it been over 5 days. You would be surprised how many people would buy it on GB or other auction sites. You done a lot already and maybe some guy will just buy it and send it off and pay someone to do anything to it to make it look good.

Not a friend. No it has not been over 5 days. I received it on Friday and Saturday I told him that I want to return it. So I let him know within the 5 days. I would have mailed it out yesterday but FedEx will not accept Ground delivery items until Monday for some reason. The seller agreed to take it back and then mail me a check. If not, I paid via Credit Card so once I send it back, if he doesnt pay me, I will call the company and have them take it off of my bill.
To everyone else: Thank you for all your help and input..
You will be happy to know I finally got myself a nice correct M1 Carbineicon made by Standard Products.

That's a good idea about stopping payment if it comes to that. I wish you would of contacted me sooner about the NPM. It is Nice, but the guy decided to buy it. Good Luck and hope your Standard Products Carbine is everything you wanted.

Well gents, that seems to close out a fine adventure. I enjoyed the suggestions, path to discovery, and the conclusion. The the OP covered the process well between the two threads. Personally as an individual that shoots more than collects I probably would have kept the Carbine and considered restoration, depending on the price paid of course. But from a pure collector standpoint I can understand the decision to send it back. It was also unique situation where the seller allowed clean up of the rifle with the option to return which permitted everyone to share in the process.

Perhaps I'm alone here, but I'd still refinish the metal. There's some severe hacks and such that can be eliminated by judicious refinishing... It just depends on whether you intend to keep it.
I'm right with you on that Jim. To me he did all that was recommended from y'all guys. Now the guy that's buying it back is going to have it refinished after he did all the work. I just wished he would have had it done. But he did score that Standard Products. I saw it on another Forum and someone was asking questions about it.

I only paid a few hundred more and got a hell of a Standard Products M1 Carbine.
It was hard to justify keeping the Winchester due to the high price I paid for it.
I would have kept it if the seller would have taken $900 or less for it.
He was not in a position to take that much because he paid $2,000 for it.
