One of my No4's does almost the same thing with some HPBT loads I have for a ross rifle, but with Spitzers no worries at all. Enfields are funny.

A spitzer has a longer bearing surface than a boattail of the same weight. It enters the throat more completely than a boattail before losing contact with the neck of the case = better guidance when the bullet is engraved by the rifling.
Boattails in military chambers that tend to be a) more generous than modern standards when new and b) a lot more generous when worn are, quite simply, not the best solution for accuracy.
If a 45-70 Sharps hits the target at 1000 yards with a bullet that is well-nigh cylindrical compared with a cal. 30 jacketed bullet, why on earth would one need a boattail to shoot at a couple of hundred? The loss in precision caused by the poor guidance into the transition cone a.k.a. throat is probably going to outweigh any BC advantage, unless you are only shooting at 600 yds or longer.

US Army trials I believe, were the ones that showed no difference inside 400 yards between boat tail and flat base ammo. outside 400 yards, boat tail was the winner.
So in essence always have ammo suited for long range work, that works fine at short range.

Well in the real world NO competitive Benchrest shooters use boattail bullets at 100 or 200 yards . They all use flat base bullets because they are more accurate . What the US Army said was the boattail did not increase more percentage wise at longer range , not that they were more accurate .
