At least this fellow has done a wee bit of research, and isn't in such a "tweaker's rush". I hope the other scope was in the system long enough for the owner of the correct rifle (if it still exists), to have seen it was for sale.

I often think that if scope and rifle have been separated then rifle no longer exists - has anyone ever actually managed to track one down in these circumstances? [on a side issue the other auction was definitely ended by the seller not ebay, so this one should run its course withiout being forcibly shut down by the site...].

I have matched up a few 'lost' telescopes with rifles. One was an ex Indian Army telescope in poor condition that I'd scrapped for its (very few) spare parts. Another strange one was a butt on a DP No4 being scrapped. The butt had the telescope number on the top, the remains of S51 underneath and the screw holes had been plugged. On the top ledge was the original rifle number and that was returned to the current owner of the rifle. The strange thing was that up until then, he'd suspected that his rifle was a good repro.

Think there is a greater chance of mating the l42 with its lost scope than a no4 t, but for me for someone to split the scope, bracket and can, its criminal, and would leave well alone.

With Hooks L1A1 scope assembly AND its chest, at least we know that the L42 is in the US somewhere with someone. And that someone is pulling his hair out looking for a suitable replacement

Lets hope the buyer has the rifle, or it could end up like the enforcer senario

"on a side issue the other auction was definitely ended by the seller not ebay"

Not entirely true. Ebay did pull pull the scope. It disapeared from ebay listing some time on Monday along with the transite case. And then for some reason the scope listing came back on Tues. Who knows why. While the scope posting was pulled the seller cut a deal with the high bidder. When the scope listing re-appeared the seller stoped it. For those of you complaining about the way that auction ended up I have to ask, how many of you intended to to outbid the $3250 high bid ?

I was, but I only bid at the end, to check if the seller hasnt been bidding it up with friends etc,in this case it never reached the end.

Well the newly listed scope is in much better condition IMHO, so long as you don't need the serial number.
