    Immediately at the end of WW1 all M1917's were overhauled at Springfield. Then placed in war reserve for 20 years. Hauled out in 1940-41 and re-issued. Many were given away to our allies. They went though minor rebuilds in 1942-'45 and surplused off in 1946-50. They have a great history and it is common to find them with all sorts of barrels, bolts, stocks on them. You have a nice find, good for you.

    It really looks like a replacement stock, its a very sweet looking - not dinged up stock by the way.
    One thing you might do is pull the stock and see if there are any markings on the interior i.e. barrel channel or behind buttplate.
    I would be interested to know if there are any marks there.

    a circle "P" proof under the hand guard
    Thats a kind of confusing statement, is it stamped on the underside of a handguard or on the stock below the handguards?
