Advisory Panel
I've shot the M1, Carbine and M14 platforms for decades without incident and they're all the same basic design. As just stated, if your components are in good shape and if as issue then no problems are to be expected. OOB detonations are not the same as slam fire or accidental trigger manipulation. The last two have the bolt in battery, usually. If it's not locked, you'll destroy your rifle. Simple...don't look for something to put in your eye sockets, your receiver will be there...

Reloading for M1As
Thanks browningauto, that cleared it up in my mind.I just wanted to confirm that all being equal, typically the bolt is locked when firing a double by mistake. Thanks to Bruce in Oz also, you gave me a lot of good info. I like to learn as much as possible and this site sure has helped. By the way Bruce in Oz, if I understand correctly, you are in Australia? I certainly am sympathetic with how the Aussies have been dealt with in regards to firearm ownership. It is a warning to us here in the USA!
