It is absolutely my favorite long arm to shoot...closely followed by my Uberti 1860 Henry replica in .45 Colt that I use for Cowboy Action Shooting. The same rifle that Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call use in Lonesome Dove. I load a 200 grain bullet in a .45 Schofield case that gives the same 1150 fps. the 200 grain .44 Henry Flat rimfire does.

If like me, some of you haven't got to shoot one of your carbines for a while - go back to page 1 of this thread and open the Hornady video. For me, the following video was one of Hickok45's You-Tube videos from 2010 on shooting his Std.Pro Carbine. Made me feel like I was up in the hills with my brother emptying some carbine brass! He gave a reasonable account of the history of the carbine, too. He also has a new video on an Inland posted in March 2017. I watched the intro, but haven't gone back to see the rest of it yet. Almost as much fun as being there and doing the shooting. I could post a link, but you should be able to find it easily. - Bob

Bob, it's not like you don't have ammo.

Yes, and one of the cans of .30 Carbine has an "unusual" story to go with it! - Bob

As for the 30 M1 carbine and the 1860 Henry, there is an amazing parallel. While not as powerful as the regular .58 caliber muskets, the 1860 Henry found favor with scouts, raiders (wilder's Lightening brigade -Spencers and Henry- and 1st DC Cavalry), skirmishers, and body guard units in the Civil War. It was prized for the high rate of fire it offered in a world of front stuffers. It was arguably the first assault rifle, albeit lever action instead of semi-automatic.
Then we have the M1 carbine. It was also less powerful than the standard 1903 Springfield or M1 Garand, it was also valued by scouts, raiders (Merrill's Marauders) , and body guards and other rear echelon troops. It was also valued for its high rate of fire power. It could be considered America's first self loading assault rifle, especially in the M2 variety.
Both were lacking at long range, but both earned great reputations in close skirmishes. Oh, by the way, both held 15 rounds!!!!
