Interesting that the "unserviceable" Remington was just that - most of the ones I have heard about came in about the same condition as the "serviceable" ones. Supposedly, the only difference was they hadn't been checked over and checked for headspace.

I too was surprised by the condition of the Remington 03A3 which was unserviczble - but it was. When I opened to box, it had the smellof the Orient. The stock looked as if it had been dragged behind a 6x6 over many miles of bad road, there was no finish left on the metal, the bolt was a contract replacment with an enlarged firing pin hole, both sights were loose. Fortunatley the barrel was in good condition as was the receiver. I replaced the bolt with an early Remington modified for scope use, the stock with a modified type C, added a milled trigger guard and had the entire rig re blued. For $7.27 I obtained an 03A3 military Redfield 03A3 base adn rings and mounted a Weaver J2.5 on it. It had a two groove barrel but accuracy was acceptable. I later traded it off for a high number RIA receiver.
