    Garand Inspection by a Civilian

Würzburg, Germanyicon, June 17, 1960: If Sp4 Kenneth Coward, left, seemed a little nervous as he talked about his M1icon rifle with a visitor to the base, it was understandable. The civilian was America's most-decorated soldier of World War II, Audie Murphy, who was making a documentary film about missiles used by the Army. Murphy was in Germany for the first time since the war, when his exploits earned him the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, three Purple Hearts and many other awards.

    Well --

at least he can be sure the "visitor" knows what he's doing with it.

There was a picture in George Forty's book on the US Army in WW II showing Ike (Eisenhower himself, if there were any other Ikes in the Army) "john wayning" a 1919 MG. I can't be certain he was firing it but there's a partial belt full on one side of the receiver and a partial belt empty on the other.

The aides around look a lot more nervous than Sp 4 Coward.
