Just a guess, one of the soldiers was wounded and the boot was removed to tend to the wound and the tanker picked up the wounded mans M1 rifle ?

Another guess is that that is one of the crew members boot, and he's changed out of those and into his spare boots for any of a number of possible reasons -- including they were worn out.

I'm guessing a sniper close, the TC is down in the hatch and not on the .50
