Jim was thoughtful to all others... I once commented on how much I'd like to have one of the US issue Case made paratroop switchblades. He immediately sent me a PM suggesting they were only about $100USD and if I'd like a common manufacture name he could send me one. I had to thank him and refuse, though it broke my heart. I'd go to the crowbar hotel for possession...and customs might have bitten him too...
Another story is a secret that I can now tell. I have an M1C paratroop helmet that I brought up during discussion here thinking it was an M1D. Once I published pics it was explained to me that it was indeed the much more common M1C, which should have been obvious to me as I wore it through my whole service time. After a time, Jim sent me a PM and said he would like to buy it and send it to Harlan Short (RIP) as a gift as he was feeling down. Jim thought it might help Harlan...and to say nothing to him. We struck a deal and I shipped it to Jim, he in turn shipped it to Harlan. About six months or so go by and Harlan sends me a PM asking if this was indeed the same helmet...I had to admit it. Pics were available after all. Harlan said in no uncertain terms that my grandsons should have the chance to inherit this and he was sending it back. No discussion was allowed... By the way he said, no mention to Jim but he had six of these already... So, here I have this helmet that has been through both of these men's hands and returned...to stay. Complete with one of Harlan's helmet stands, you guys remember...

Be Damned,
After Harlans 'Wife' stole/sold/gave away his carbines while he was laid up in the hospital. Jim and I came up with a thought: How to get a Carbine to Harlan. I knew Harlan was wanting something he could use out in the field with his son. Jim supplied all the parts, mags, mag pouches... to finish off a bare Underwood barreled receiver with stock I had. I shipped to a well known parts seller near San Antonio. His next show near Dallas he delivered to Harlan. I had told Harlan to be home that I would be calling that afternoon (He thought I was in Town) for directions to his place. Harlan was told it was from us and was his as long as our names didn't come up. He called me minutes after the 'Delivery Man' left. He was overwhelmed but also sad that I wasn't really in town. It was about 7-8 months later that we lost Harlan. I hope it is now in his son Tony's possession.
I have items from both Jim and Harlan that I cherish. Items I keep the dust off of.
It's true.... What goes around comes around.
I've said it before........ There are some great people here......

No, customs and excise would sacrifice a man so they have a representative there to collect...

I got to know Jim on this forum. We both had a heartbreak in common. We both lost children, his daughter and my son Jake. We did several PM's about our loss and I believe it gave us both comfort. One other thing that we shared is that I lost an uncle to Agent Orange.

Jim Flavin was a great guy.. like others I met him on this forum, I have one of his Carbine canvas crates ends that I keep on my wall in remembrance of him. Jim and i walked on the same soil in San Diego in the Navy, just different years.
Here is a picture of his shadow box.

I was posting a picture of him in Vietnam but took it down because I don't know if it's okay to post it.

I'm sorry for your loss.
I've been thinking of those many absent friends right now as I've been assisting a friend's widow with his estate.
To our Absent Friends...may we remember the good times, and the bad times... and their memories never fade.

I can't say this was unexpected, agent orange had killed him just as so many vets. Jim was a great guy and honest to the core. It is just too bad that they had moved up to WA. and things were going great. He knew what was coming and faced it square in the eye. Just too bad.
