Stag uppers and 22 conversion kits
Anyone have a Stag upper and a Stag 22 conversion kit they could share their experiences with?
Or for "comparison" any other brand of upper and conversion kit.
I've done some looking around and found a couple of manufacturers of the kits in the $129 range. Stag is in the $220 range but is stainless where the others are not. Stainless was adding another $70 to those brands which bring it more into line with the Stag and there are a few dealers selling the Stags for a bit less.
Reviews I've read have not been very favorable to the non-Stag conversion kits stating there is an issue with jamming every few rounds, a problem not shared by the Stag kit in a Stag upper. The only issue with the Stag was that it may not work with Remington 22LR ammo (instructions from the factory) which I'm assuming is more with the ammo than the kit.
I have a friend that is building an AR and I'm sure his next step will be a 22 conversion due to the reduced cost of the ammo. I'm also considering one for a Stag model 6 Super Varminter because if he's shooting 22LR, I want to be shooting the same.

No one has experience with sub-caliber inserts?
I recall using them when I was in the service on a few occasions with the M-16's but that was too long ago (25 years) to recall how well they worked. I don't remember any problems but they were probably Colt manufacture in Colt firearms.

Yes, I have a CMMG right now. It works well and I actually prefer the Chiappa mags for ease of loading. I had a Atchisson 20 yrs ago and it too worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I only had one mag and no others were available. I don't think you need a dedicated upper. I would just use my favorite M4gery with an insert. My upper is a Cerro forging but I don't know who finished it. My lower is a Dlask from here in Vancouver area. The other upper I used was a cast off military A1 and I have used 7", 9" and 12" twist with no problem. I don't use any special ammo and it all works passably for stoppages. I clean regularly. Does that help?

Jim,
Yes, it is encouraging. I don't want to shell out $200 for something that may not work well so anyone who has positive experiences with the devices is a positive. I'm not in a mad rush to buy one, neither is my friend but with ammo prices continuing to rise, it is a strong consideration for the near future.
Thanks

yes , i have a model 1 sales dedicated upper for my 20" rifle and a spikes tactical conversion unit with my 16" carbine , both shoot well but i think the dedicated a tad more accurate , i have a ceinar conversion in my m16 A1 retro , it shoots great
ive given all of my kids/kids-in-law a conversion of one brand or another for each of theirs as well , none are extremely accurate but all are good enough to be fun and effective for practice , i cant think of a cheaper way to shoot them
