    scoped mauser project

    Hi Guys

This is my first post on this site, and you may find it interesting. I am considering purchasing a russian capture kar98k rifle and scoping it. I looked around at authentic scoped kar98k's and scopes, but the prices are far beyond my pocketbook. I found a really nice repro scope with rings and side rail mount, it's carl zeiss zielvier 4 power, the price is about 500 cdn. Even though the result wouldn't be a true ww2 mauser sniper, I would still cherish it. Has anyone scoped a mauser like this before, and if so what were the results like? I've already got a non-scoped mauser kar98k, and maybe he would like some company. Any advice on this project would be welcome. Cheers.

Surely someone out there must have tried this with a Mauser at some point in time?

I've never done it but know ppl who have. Biggest draw back from doing this to get a representative shooter of the LSR sniper is that the gunsmithing is INTENSIVE to install the mount properly. Expect it to cost much more than your $500 guesstimate

Also, make sure the gun shoots before dropping money into it.

Both parts and smithing will run this up in a big hurry, If you wanted just a scoped shooter, fine, NBD. A repro on the other hand will well exceed the price of the rifle, many X's-SDH

I should also point out it will depend greatly on how "correct" you want it to be.

As you know, good reproductions of the mount and scope are available with known pricing. the gunsmithing will easily be in the $100-200 range, probably more.

Then, assuming you are working with one of the RC K98kicon's, you have to contend with the fact it will be mitmatched, in an unknown state of condition, and will have incorrect parts for that manufacturer and year.

Ones you polish out all the electropencil from the parts you can salvage and buy the needed correct parts off e-bay or whatever, the cost could really be high. Also consider you need a sniper flag safety and the checkered buttplate.

If the RC stock turns out to be one of the more heavily sanded ones or worse, cracked, you may need to replace it as well.

This is a doable project, but be aware of the costs up front and plan ahead for how much you want to accomplish with your mis-matched parts gun reproduction sniper before you set your budget.

Sounds like it is going to be much more expensive than I initially though! Maybe I will just remove the rear sight, and go with a removable scout mount with an LER scope. Low tech but much less expensive, and I can always put the rifle back to its original condition when done.

Here's a link you might like to check out.
A fellow on these boards made a similar project out of a Yugoicon rifle.

Wow Skippy, thanks for the info! That sure sounds like a nice project, and the end result is a great shooter too. I checked out the cost of those rifles and they are about the same as a Russianicon capture KAR98K. With one of those unmarked Mausers though, one could certainly do a bit more free lancing with regards to mounts and optics... interesting posibilities to say the least. I ordered The Germanicon Sniper 1914 - 1945 last week, so hopefully it gets here soon so I can start droolog over the photos and get more ideas. So many options.. only one credit card ( currently on fire )

There's a yugo refurbed K98kicon with the yugo crest on the receiver on the CGN EE right now for (I think) $250. Though personally I would not condone a d&t job on any decent K98k unless you were replicating an ACTUAL WW2 era sniper. But I'm anal like that

I'm kinda considering something along the same lines but, a whole lot cheaper. I'm thinking Bosnia. Take a V.g. condition M-48, add a set of Zack scope mounts and optics set to 8 m/m and I'll be good to. I'll post it once I get going on it-SDH
