Late IBM Build

Got all the IBM parts (still looking for a slide) and put it together over the weekend. I think it turned out nice. Was wondering if you guys think this could be the original rear sight? Look at the stake marks.....Frank

Here is a picture of the staking on a late IBM of mine. I cant tell exactly what yours looks like from the pictures. Let me know if the style of staking is similar.

mpd, yes very similar. The front one is rectangular with crisp corners. The rear one doesn't have quite as crisp corners. The sight on on yours and mine are the same. I know I need to learn how to take better pictures. Mine is serial #3,957,597, is yours close? Thanks.....Frank

Frank- CClub reports IRCO rear sites between 3876247-3958xxxx
IRCO sites with 7160060 between 38867xx- 3956234
And Milled adjustable sights with H in shield from 3932180-3937923
So based on that report, I would say quite probable that adjustable sight could be original.

mar53, thank you for that info. This one is I.R.C.O. 7160060 and would be 1,363 later than 3,956,234. There is no signs of any other stake or chisel marks. Do you happen to know wich CC news letter had that information.....Frank

Mine is 3887758 and has the IR CO with the #'s.

Frank - The CC newsletter on IBM is #329 - a very good write up. As I recall, the newsletter is based on Carbines that have been reported. So the the number ranges are probably not exact- just what they have on file. you will notice that the plain sight without the 7160060 stamping was actually reported to a later # than the one with the 7160060 (which is the later model I think). Other stuff I have read says that IBM was notoriously bad about keeping stuff in order, parts wise, so it would not be surprising to me, for them to use 7160060 sights and plain ones interchangeably, or run out of numbered ones, and revert back to plain ones. Since this was near the end of production for IBM, they were probably using whatever was left in the bucket. So the fact that yours is slightly out of the range would not necessarily mean it is not correct - IMO - but again I am no expert. I have two IBM carbines myself, but they are both much earlier in the production cycle. Both have IRCO 7160060 sights, which were put on in rebuild and are not original - so no good data points for you there.

My Winchester has an original stamped adjustable and it is just a single nice clean punch front and back like yours. My NPM is an updated with milled PI and you can clearly see where the flat staking punch held the type one sight in place. You see nothing like that on your IBM, so I vote for original equipt too.
