They sure look hand stamped. None of mine are stamped. Interesting

I would guess...
...some sort of inventory marking. Like 3rd Inf. , company F , rifle 78. Just a WAG of course. Chris

I have seen the markings on other frogs. Most likely unit markings.

Could it have anything to do with this rifle being presented to a cadet upon graduating from West Point? My reason for asking is because this rifle belonged to Major General Henry Randolph Westphalinger who told my father when he gave him the rifle (some 50 years ago) that he was presented this NM rifle when he graduated West Point in 1923 or 1924 not exactly sure. (See my thread "1st post" for more pics of the rifle)
I'm wondering if they are unit markings within West Point or something to that order. But why the frogs and not the stock or something less likely to be removed from the rifle?
Hopefully someone here can figure it out.
Thanks all.

JB71, keep in mind that the sling may not be original to the rifle. The leather slings do break and may have been replaced. Also the sling may have been added some time after it was presented to the Westphalinger.

Mark1... Yep I hear ya. If I've learned one thing about 03's and 03A3's it's that anything is possible.
RBruce...Any more information about your pic?? Looks like mine only with different numbers and letters of course.
