Saved a 1937 K98 Portugese Mauser

An acquaintance that I shoot with mentioned to me that he owns a pair of 1937 K98 Portugese Mauser rifles which he purchased in Germany in 1983. As they had been sitting in a small gun shop undisturbed for a number of years, he was able to purchase them and he brought them to BC when he immigrated. All the numbers match on the metal parts, the Walnut stock, the sling and the bayonet. The guns came with a slide-on V to protect the front sight and a muzzle safe to protect the crown during cleaning. One of the guns was already tapped and fitted with a scope for hunting and the other one was untouched but at a local gunsmith to be converted into a 30-06. The gun that I saw was the tapped one. The wood was not refinished but seemed in excellent condition. To save the untapped specimen from being destroyed I sold him a like new 1937 Oberndorf action which already had been tapped for a scope and he recovered the Portugese from the Smith untouched.
This acquaintance does not have a computer so I showed him this website and we compared his gun to those in the Library. I made him aware of the great interest in unaltered military rifles and persuaded him to keep it unaltered.
