My unusual $80 Portuguese 1904/39.
Picked this one up today...I've been looking for a Vaquiero for some time, and this $80 all matching beauty popped up. HOWEVER..it has some details that I'm wondering about. Here we go....
Bent bolt, bolt knob flattened. Three holes driled for what was obviously a side mounted scope mount, and a divot in the upper hand guard to clear..the scope?
Someone removed the bayo lug. In fact it looks as if there never was a bayo lug. Cleaning rod channel filled in. Not a hack job at all. Seems like a lot of work for the average Joe.
I'm not even going to speculate 'sniper'....but I am wondering if there were specialized target models made from these rifles. Any idea? Armorer job? Senior Bubba?
Oh yeah, the mag folower is missing. Do I need a genuine Portuguese follower, or will a standard 98 follower work in this?
Beautifully made rifle. Cant wait to fire it!

The notch in the hand guard was done to clear the mount itself rather than a scope I reckon. The clearance cut in the stock looks recently done compared to the hand guard mods unless it's just the light causing it to appear than way. Also, if you haven't noticed already, your missing the FS protector too. Nice looking rifle though and well worth the 80 frog skins IMO. It's in 7.92x57 mm right?

It is the light. Cut is dark in person. Yep, in 7.92.

Sure doesn't look like arsenal work to me. Looks like Bubba got ahold of an uncommon Milsurp.

Anzac, Such a deal! Are you going to repair the wood? Looks like some easy repairs. Springfield Sporters has bolt bodies for $30. Salt Flat

Probably leave the bolt as is, as it is matching. Definitely will repair the wood. Mainly need a mag follower and spring, and a front sight protector. In fact, if anyone has these items, I'd love to hear from you!

Adding link to a photo thread I started a while back for ease of cross referencing (Added a link to here in that one as well):

BTW, in this thread is also a link to a useful bolt assembly/disassembly thread done by diopter some time back.
