    Push Button Safety

The push safety on my 1944 Winchester will only engage/move if the action is cocked. Is this normal, or should it move side to side whether the weapon is cocked, or not? Thanks in advance.

Its not normal, you have an issue with the trigger not resetting properly.

+1 for what Brian said. You probably have a trigger spring that is not set right, or maybe a dis-connector problem.
