Not ALL of the site members live in areas that ALLOW centre-fire semi-auto rifles!

Quite a few folk in the UKicon have AR15's - but they are made as single shot: no gas tube/piston system - have to be manually cycled for each round - similar to a traditional bolt action.

    A .22 upper/dedicated rifle IS allowed here

So you qualified expert on shooting a 22. Would that have helped you if you would have had to go to combat right after? Oh I guess they could have handed you a ballistic chart.

PS Thank you for your service.

the Air Force is smart they send their officers out to fight and they don't us M-16s. They have a slightly larger caliber found. BTW I was Army.
Lackland was the giveaway for the Air Force.

I suppose I learned how to aim and how the AR worked and how to hit a man shaped target at 100yds in really cold weather. But to fulfill a DOD requirement is all it was good for.

I guess Lackland was Army at one time and I'm not sure what you mean by slightly larger caliber found? I lived off base and shared a house with 4 soldiers from FT Carson, Co. This AF firefighter was an Ulta light sleeper and those Grunts could sleep through an artillery barrage I'm just saying. I'm still in touch with one after 30 years. Good times good memory's.

For all you members, $30(price subject to inflation) makes you a contributing member. I think this great site is worth it.

It just saddens me to hear the Aussies and Britts lament their loss of freedom and I applaud their pursuit of the hobby in spite of the burden. I did not know I was anywhere close to violating the rules. Sorry.

Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

I guess if you absolutely love all things .22 then go for it! Lord knows I've spent more money on things that I'm sure I would be ridiculed for. Like my cat sweater collection. Kidding.... Kidding.....

Color me stupid here, but don't the armed forces now train with blanks and "laser tag" gear strapped to their rifles? Never mind simulators like F.A.T.S. And if you confuse the ballistic curve of a .22 with a 5,56, 9mm, or .45, you aren't apt to to do well in other training scenarios either...

I believe one major reason I won so many matches at Ft. Benning was partly due to the mass quantities of .22rf rounds I sent downrange before the matches. Transitioning between calbers is probably beneficial, as the rimfire lets you run to the ragged edge of sight reaquistion. When forced to allow for the longer recovery time of the larger caliber, it feels like you have all the time in the world to get a good sight picture whilst riding the rifle down back onto the target.
