    Early cartridges

The cartridge on the left is the Winchester 224E2 developed for the Winchester Light Weight Military Rifle. This rifle looked like an enlarged M1icon carbine but was still diffferent, total weight was 5.5 lbs with loaded magazine, barrel was 20 inches. The Winchester 224E2 cartridge could be fired in the Armalite AR-15 which was chambered for the 222 Rem Special cartridge
which was slightly longer than the 222 Remington cartridge that was used at the start of the experimentation of the Armalite rifles. The longer 222 Remington case became the 222 Rem Special which became the 5,56mm and 223 cartridge. The 224E2 Winchester could be fired in the Armalite but the 222 Rem Special could not be fired in the Winchester becauseof the total lengthAttachment 40204Attachment 40203
