Yet another question regarding Australian MDs.

I had posted a question a while back concerning Australianicon military districts, and completely failed to ask the one question that I meant to ask in the first place. Did MDs exist during the Great War, or after? And would a rifle manufactured during the Great War bear an MD marking? A purchase of a second 1917 Lithgow this past weekend has got me wondering. It is marked '2nd MD', as opposed to '2MD', and the info I am getting from other sources is conflicting at best.
    Just wonderin'..
