Modified/Repaired No5 Butt
Hi Guys,
Has anyone seen a repair or modified butt like this before? It is a particularly good join. Any possibility it occurred in service or at a factory?

That looks like someone made a longer butt out of two.

Or has he shortened it BAR? He must have spaced the stock-bolt by the same amount of shortening(?) Not sure that I'd accept a straight end grain to end grain butt-joint (sorry about the pun.....) but if it's stood the test of time, then so be it!

I was working with the theory of most butts are too short and it's hard to find a long. I had one but it didn't match the rest of the wood...it would need to be closer examined I guess.

T-Bone, it looks like the wood on both sides of the joint are almost matching (is it my computer screen or is it real?). If it's the same wood, then Peter might be right -- the wrist's been shortened. A segment may have been removed (not sure why -- a break would have shattered a large segment of the wrist).
My No. 5 measures exactly 4 inches from the receiver butt socket to the pistol nub on the underside of the stock. What does yours measure?
