Whoever drilled and tapped my receiver got the front hole off center causing the front of the scope base to sit off to the right. Just the left edge of the base touches the receiver leaving a gap on the right side. I'm trying to decide what to do. I would have the hole plugged and redrilled correct.
Shouldn't cost more than $50 tops.

not many real gunsmiths, would touch that rifle for that money, and get it right.
if its trully off that much, weld the hole, then redrill. a bit more then 50.00
however.
most if not all real A4,s are drilled off center, as the rear bridge is off center to the center of the reciever ring.
the new China made bases are bent as well, and likely need bending to fit right.
remove the base, and see if your holes are indeed center with the muzzle.
a little off may be ok, and windage screw adjustments can fix that..
FYI: most if not all real gunsmith shops have a min, fee for work done.
standard is 75.00. mail order work may be more depending on the smith,
and turnaround time can be long...
i like to get things done, and on the way home within 3 weeks.
heres some standard rates..{not mine} of most gunsmith work.
drill and tap a hardened receiver. 35.00 per hole. plus set up time.
to clean, and safety check...75.00 min.
headspace check, and some{testfire} 50.00 plus shop time.
thats a run across the board flat rate...some may be more, some may be less.
all in all you get what you pay for..that being said.
mosts low dollar work with take 6 mos, to a year to get your gun back.
and even then, it might not be right...hard to find a smith that knows 1903,s 1917,s and other WW2 US weapons.
I think the amount that it is off can be adjusted by the windage screws. It makes the scope sit more on the right side, but thats ok too, I'm a lefty. But I was concerned about it holding zero with the minimal contact between base and receiver.
Sorry, I meant plugged if it was that far off.
My local smith charges $15 a hole for D&T, no minimum setup.

I would have it plugged (welded) and re-tapped. It is irritating to look down your barrel and see an off-center mount. Whatever it cost, it would be worth it to me. Windage adjustments weren't installed in scopes to account for off-center mounts.

I agree with Jim, if it's out of true it's always going to bug you. It's worth it to fix it correctly.
Get you a job mounting new scopes on new rifles with new mounts. You will realize WHY windage screws on the "rotary dovetail" bases are included!!!Quote:

I have had to use those base windage adjustments more than once - like every time. I zero the adjustments on the scope, use the windage base adjustments while bore sighting, and the vertical adjustments on the scope for elevation. If the elevation adjustment is too great in my opinion, I shim the front (or rear) of the base. For that matter, all bores aren't straight either.
