Hi
I pre-ordered a copy from Amazon in the UK and it arrived a couple days ago, ahead of their schedule. I haven't really done much more than skim through it yet, but first impressions are good. There are some nice illustrations and good photographs of the rifles and period service use.
The text is really an overview of the rifle right through the many marks and period of service. There are some nice quotes from old soldiers dotted throughout, to give an idea of contemporary use and stories about snipers etc.
I'd say it's certainly worth buying, but don't expect Skennerton's level of detail!:)
Well, I got it; wouldn't recommend it though.
Nicely produced book but lots of gaps in the story, for example there is no reference to SMLE production at Ishapore. Australian production is only mentioned in passing in the Korean War part.
I didn't know that the 7.62 L8 rifles "proved unexpectedly accurate" in trials, or that the main differentiating feature of the No 4 Mk1* was the two groove barrel...
My mistake...
There actually IS reference to production at Ishapore, but I only found it on the third reading.
Still doesn't change my opinion of the book. More than a few errors in text and captions.
Why Osprey have to persist with use of "paintings'' type illustrations is beyond me. More photos would have been more use.
