Has anyone ever seen these cut out marks in front of the markings on the barrel or know what they are (see attached image)? This is on a No4Mk1 with a Fazakerley receiver WWII era serial number but no date visible. Bolt # doesn't match receiver and no other markings found on this barrel.
All production No4's have a little 1" or so recessed ledge at the front left of the body, before the breeching up ring. This looks to me (mind you, it's a poor photo to judge by.....) as thogh it is an early fazakerley made rifle and the semi skilled machinist hasn't quite got the grasp of the vertical milling machine settings.
BSA were the most constant quality. But don't mix up constant with good or perfect - It just means constant! That's the reason BSA rifles were chosen for conversion to sniper rifles where the conversion process could be simplified because the product was of a constant quality
You'll find many different variations of machinings on Enfield rifles and even more so on Bren guns. Upcut horizontal milling, downcut horizontal, rough tooling cuts and........., well all sorts. But desperate times mean desperate needs and all that!
Thanks Peter. Do you think the uniqueness would add any value or just the opposite. The stock is in good shape and the barrel is clean and some shine, while the overall metal has common wear with the paint coming off. Overall condition is "good". What value due you think it would sell for?
I'm not a dealer, trader, buyer or seller so to me it's just another bog standard Fazakerley rifle. The only true value is what you'll get for it in an auction. Others have vague and wonderful ideas of values but..........
Probably had the feed rate to high...

Ah, yes..... and you're right GaryS. It's the logo on the outside of the UK MoD Infantry Headquarters. The old sign was getting tatty so one of the top brass asked if I could '....do something about it' So the red shield was flatted and repainted and I made the new 1.5:1 scale bayonet to fit the shield from resin, wood, stainless steel and brass. It'd have been a whole LOT easier if it was just 1:1 scale!
The irony was that I originally made a similar stainless, brass and wood No5 bayonet to a similar 1.5:1 (one and a half x size.....) that looked really nice. Silver blade, teak grips black pommell and crosspiece but nope......... they wanted an SA80 bayonet!
