My 1943 IBM mixmaster

This is my 1943 IBM. The bright barrel is a 1944 dated Inland, the wood and sling are new as is the reproduction rear sight.

Yes. All the above guns except for the M1 went to the range yesterday. I was shooting silhouettes at 250 yds with all. The carbine has a great bore but I can't hit the metal target at 250 with the flip site. I hit all around it though :) The others do just fine at that range. The M1888 is very accurate with Remington factory loads but I don't like shooting jacketed ammo through the old girl. The lead bullet cowboy loads don't seem to be as consistent. Could be my old eyeballs though :)

The M1 is a 1942. I just finished restoring it. Except for the sling, wood and new barrel, every part dates to August of 1942 or earlier. I think that is why it is going back to the gunsmith. It malfunctions on the last two rounds of each clip. It will slam-fire the last round and may or may not eject the empty clip. I suspect the operating rod is too worn.

I can't get my head around your Garand malf. Slam fires the last round, and might not eject clip. I don't see the connection to a bad op rod. I was thinking clip ejector spring, but I don't know if that would have anything to do with a slam fire. But why would an Op Rod cause a slam fire. Hmmmmm............. I'm no garand guru though. If it slam fires, I would guess that either the hammer is following for some reason only on the last round. Or..... I don't know. Stuck firing pin??? But that seems odd that it would only be on the last round. Weird.

I think the bolt is not going all the way to the rear. That would explain how it is closing on an empty clip and probably not engaging the sear. I don't know why it only does it on the last round. The gunsmith re-parkerized everything and installed the new barrel. Her fired five test rounds. My first time at the range, I loaded a clip of brand new commercial 150 gr. FMJ. I fired two three shot groups and then Bam-Bam-Ting. I stripped the weapon and could find nothing visually wrong. I put it back together and loaded a second clip of the same ammo and again fired two three shot groups and on the seventh pull of the trigger Bam-Bam. This time the bolt closed over the empty clip. That was enough for me, I put the rifle back in it's case.

The bolt has to be going all the way back if it's firing all 8 rounds. But why the double on the last........... Hmmmmmmmmm....... Above my pay grade. I would imagine if you ask the guys in the Garand forum, they could help you. If you don't get any answers here, I can go ask on Arfcom for you. Those guys know a lot over there. OR the CMP forums.

My garand was short stroking when I first got it. The op rod was rubbing against the stock and I needed to sand the stock just a tad. Problem solved after that and I've never had a problem with it after that. Now, there is a test you can do to see if that is happening. Called the tip test. But I really don't think that's your problem, so I won't explain it on here. I still think you might need a new clip ejector spring, but it doesn't explain the double on the last two shots. I don't think it does at least.

Hmmm, I'll contact the gunsmith and ask him to look at that possibility as well. The stock is new and I did final fitting, sanding and six coats of Lin-Speed. At first, it was a very tight fit on my receiver. It still requires a tug to separate the receiver from the stock.

Did you break down your bolt at any point? A sticky firing pin could cause slam fires or doubles. I think I already said that. But why the last round. A tight stock is good. But it might be affecting something somewhere. I wonder if a worn out sear is the problem. But even that, why only the last round. Hmmm...........

Did your IBM have a scope mounted on it at one time?
Looks as though it may have been tapped for one on the left side of the receiver... per your picture
