SMLE bolt numbering?

I recently saw an early SMLE which had it's bolt replaced with one from another rifle. As far as I know, standard procedure was to remove the old number completely and then stamp the new one in the linished area. In this case the old number was lined through and the new one stamped beneath it. Does this sound like an official military repair or something else?

I have seen old numbers lined out but only if they're very small but generally there's no room for two sets! The EMER relating to it isn't quite clear* but there is nothing whatsoever to be gained by having the old number visible. So we waited until we had a batch and sent them to the machine shop where they'd be turned back a tad in the lathe and then refinished.
* The old Base Workshop inspection standard had a minium thickness for the bolt handle and this was to allow the removal of material prior to the renumbering of bolts

It would tell you the bolt has been changed & if correctly done, by whom, Joe citizen (aka Bubba) or in-service.

Ah, yes......... But we didn't have any joe citizens, human turkeys or bubbas 5th Batt. And most CERTAINLY not in any of the workshops or among the Armorers under my wing!
