Vz24
Seems like a lot of fellows are getting these lately. This has been one of my top four wants for a couple of years now and I refuse to pay $400+ for a beat to crap one. Picked this one up in a private sale for about half that. The finish is gone but other than that, it's in pretty good shape. Bore could be a bit better but has very strong rifling, just a bit dark with some pitting. Took the wood off last night and metal under the wood is probably about 95%. Had a lot of fossilized cosmoline in there and what could have been fine sand grains but hard to tell on that, it was gritty. Would possibly explain why the exposed metal is bare. Missing the cleaning rod and I haven't been able to get a good feel on what size I need to get. I see 14 3/4 to 17 3/4 inch lengths advertises as being VZ24. I believe they are also supposed to be a thicker stock that won't work with a K98. Any help there would be appreciated.
These are the seller's photos, I haven't had a chance to take any of my own yet. He did a pretty good job.

The rod in my VZ24 is 14.75" long. It has a 6mm shaft (.237") and head, with a tapper behind the head to allow for a cleaning patch. A spare Spanish K98 rod in my stash has a 6mm (.237") head and a 5mm (.197") shaft. It is 12.5" long. :D

Thanks Tom. That's the direction I was kind of leaning but wanted to make sure. Liberty Tree is the one selling the longer ones and saying they are VZ24 rods.

Nice looking VZ24
Nice looking Vz24 Lion Crest rifle. I see the E3(Lion)37 Czech military acceptance mark above the serial number. I have an E3(Lion)38 Lion Crest. I do find that the left side rear swivel gets in the way some, but the rifle shoots very well. I paid about $340 for mine on GB (included shipping). Couldn't even find a decent one at the Tulsa gun show! There are some refinished ones out there that have a lot asked for them. I was wanting an unfinished original rifle. Although mine has much finish remaining, cannot tell if it is original or redone. If it is redone, it was done a while ago, as there is wear at the serial number just about where one might place their thumb when firing.

Easy way to tell if it was redone is to look for bluing in the pitting. My guess is that yours was redone at an arsenal at some point, probably shortly after the war. Nothing wrong with that.

Cleaning rod arrived and after some time spent getting fossilized cosmoline out of the stock nut, it fit perfectly. Got a repro sling from Mountain State supply and it's good to go.
