I think that fellow in the photo must be carrying it as a status symbol, in the warzone that is Syria I would imagine any choice of small arms are available. A SVD or PSL for example is likely more available, a more regionally common cartridge, and would offer similar capability with much reduced carry weight, but then he would look like any other goon out on the battlefield and not Tier 1 Operator.
We've had these type of pics before.
Someone has been training them ie low ready carry and trigger discipline.
More startlingly, is the use of the safety on an AK, during my time in the dustier parts of the world, an AK was always stored, carried, and fired on automatic. Random bursts rattling into the night or their friend were a common occurrence, it was just a matter of learning the art of never being in front of a weapon muzzle, and always to the side of any guy with an RPG.
