Found this in a box. Has anyone ever used one? It's in Ruth's first book.

Jim, that is awesome! I've never seen one other than in the books.

I've got one but I don't know how to use it.
Mine is stamped "M1R" on the drop down tab at the rear.

What surprised me was nobody comment on the serial number. It's my lowest Underwood.

So...the idea is to scribe an index line for centering the sight?

According to the picture it looks like you scribe the receiver. Now, does anyone have an M1 carbine with a scribe mark on the receiver as in the illustration?
